How to Ripen Pears at Home

Unlike most fruit, pears ripen from the inside out. The best way to test ripeness is the "neck test" — press gently near the stem. When it gives slightly, the pear is ripe throughout. A pear that yields only at the widest point is overripe.

  • Counter ripening: Leave pears at room temperature in a bowl — 1–4 days depending on how firm they are.
  • Speed up ripening: Place in a paper bag with a banana or apple — ethylene gas accelerates the process.
  • Once ripe: Move to the fridge immediately and eat within 2–3 days.
  • Never refrigerate unripe pears — cold temperatures stop the ripening enzyme and the pear will never fully ripen.

Pear Nutrition

One medium pear (178g) provides: 101 calories, 27g carbohydrates, 5.5g fibre (one of the highest of any fruit), vitamin C, potassium and folate. The skin contains most of the fibre and antioxidants — always eat pears unpeeled.
