Plums in August: Out of Season
August — plum season still months away.
When Are Plums in Season in Australia?
Australian plum season runs from November through March, peaking in January and February. The Goulburn Valley (Victoria) and South Australia's Riverland produce most of Australia's plum crop. Plums come in dozens of varieties — red, yellow, green and black — each with distinct flavour profiles.
Australian Plum Varieties
- Blood Plum (Mariposa): Deep red flesh, very sweet, slight tartness. The most popular eating plum. Jan–Feb.
- Satsuma: Firm, rich red flesh, excellent flavour. Best for eating and cooking. Dec–Feb.
- Santa Rosa: Red-yellow skin, amber flesh, sweet-tart. First to arrive in season. Nov–Dec.
- Greengage: Small, green-yellow, intensely sweet with honey notes. A gourmet variety. Jan–Feb.
- Elephant Heart: Very large, dark red, rich and sweet. Late-season favourite. Feb–Mar.
How to Pick a Ripe Plum
- Give test: Press near the stem — a ripe plum gives slightly. Rock hard is underripe, very soft is overripe.
- Bloom: A light white-grey dusty coating is natural and indicates freshness.
- Fragrance: Ripe plums have a sweet, winey scent near the stem.
- Deep colour: For red varieties, the deeper the colour, the sweeter the flesh.
Plum Nutrition
Two plums (132g): 60 calories, 16g carbs, 1.8g fibre, vitamins A, C and K, potassium and sorbitol. Prunes (dried plums) are famous for digestive health — fresh plums contain the same sorbitol that supports gut motility, just in smaller amounts.
