📅 Coming Into Season
When Are Grapes in Season in your region?
Grapes in your region: peak season runs September and October. Timing shifts with local climate and supply, so treat this as a guide — the seasonal tool below breaks it down month by month.
Australian Grape Varieties to Know
- Thompson Seedless (Green): Classic sweet, crisp table grape. Available Jan–Apr.
- Red Globe: Large, crunchy, mild flavour with seeds. Great for cheese boards. Feb–May.
- Muscat (Gordo): The sweetest Australian grape — distinct muscatel flavour. Mar–May.
- Crimson Seedless: Red, crisp, sweet-tart balance. Seedless and very popular. Jan–Apr.
- Cotton Candy: Novelty variety with a distinctly sweet, candy-like flavour. Dec–Feb.
How to Pick the Sweetest Grapes
- Plump, round berries: Full, round grapes are ripe. Shrivelled or soft grapes are declining.
- Green stems: Fresh green flexible stems mean the bunch was recently harvested. Dry, brown stems indicate age.
- Tight attachment: Gently shake the bunch — in fresh grapes, the berries should stay firmly attached. Loose berries mean the bunch is old.
- White bloom: A light dusty bloom on dark grapes is natural and indicates freshness.
- Colour depth: Darker coloured grapes are generally sweeter — deep purple and red varieties are richest in flavour.
How to Store Grapes
Do not wash grapes until eating — moisture promotes mould. Store unwashed in the fridge in their original bag or a ventilated container. Properly stored, grapes keep for 1–2 weeks in the fridge. Grapes can be frozen whole for up to 3 months — frozen grapes make an excellent snack on hot days.
Grape Nutrition
One cup of grapes (151g): 104 calories, 27g carbs, 1.4g fibre, vitamins C and K, potassium and resveratrol. Resveratrol in dark grapes is a powerful antioxidant associated with cardiovascular and anti-cancer benefits.
