How to Pick a Fresh Apple

  • Firm skin: Press gently — there should be zero give. Any softness means the apple is mealy inside.
  • Rich colour: The base colour should be fully developed — no large green patches on red varieties.
  • Intact skin: No cuts, bruises or soft spots. Even small bruises spread and cause off-flavours.
  • Fresh stem: A dry, shrivelled stem indicates long storage. A plump green stem means recently picked.

How to Store Apples

Apples produce ethylene gas which accelerates ripening of all nearby fruit. Store apples in the fridge drawer, away from other produce. They will stay crisp for 4–6 weeks refrigerated. At room temperature, apples last 1–2 weeks before going mealy.
