How to Tell if a Fig is Ripe

  • Drooping neck: A ripe fig bends at the neck and droops under its own weight.
  • Soft touch: Gently squeeze — a ripe fig is very soft and gives easily. Firm figs are underripe.
  • Honeydew droplet: A small honey-like droplet at the base (the "eye") means the fig is fully ripe and sweet.
  • Slight split: A tiny split in the skin near the eye is normal and means the fig is at peak ripeness.

Fig Nutrition

Two fresh figs (100g): 74 calories, 19g carbs, 2.9g fibre, calcium, potassium, vitamin B6 and polyphenols. Figs are one of the best plant sources of calcium — making them valuable for bone health in dairy-free diets. Dried figs concentrate all these nutrients further.
