When Are Lemons at Their Best in Australia?

Unlike most fruit, lemons are available year-round in Australia — they fruit continuously. However, the juiciest, thinnest-skinned lemons are harvested in May, June and July. Summer lemons have thicker, spongier skin and significantly less juice. If you're juicing lemons or making lemon curd, buy in winter for the best yield.

Eureka vs Lisbon Lemon

🍋 Eureka Lemon

The most common supermarket lemon. Nearly seedless, juicy, medium tartness. Available almost year-round. Good all-purpose lemon.

🍋 Lisbon Lemon

More seeds than Eureka, thinner skin, higher juice yield and stronger flavour. Peak winter harvest. Preferred by chefs for its intensity.

🍋 Meyer Lemon

A lemon-mandarin hybrid. Sweeter, less acidic, thinner skin. Orange-yellow when ripe. Excellent for desserts and lemon curd. Winter season.

How to Pick the Juiciest Lemon

  • Heavy for size: The most reliable indicator of juice content. Pick up two similar lemons and choose the heavier one.
  • Thin skin: Smooth, thin-skinned lemons have more flesh and juice. Thick, rough-textured skin means more pith and less juice.
  • Slightly soft: A little give under gentle pressure means thinner skin. Rock-hard lemons are often thick-skinned.
