Honeydew in August: Out of Season
August — honeydew approaching.
When Is Honeydew Melon in Season in Australia?
Australian honeydew melon season runs from October through March, with the peak in December through February. Honeydew is the mildest and sweetest of the melon family — when ripe it has creamy pale-green flesh with a delicate honey fragrance. Like rockmelon, it does not increase in sweetness after harvest.
How to Tell if a Honeydew is Ripe
- Creamy yellow-white skin: Ripe honeydew skin turns from bright green to a creamy, slightly waxy pale yellow. Still very green = underripe.
- Velvet texture: Run your hand over the surface — a ripe honeydew feels slightly sticky or velvety. Dry and smooth = underripe.
- Smell the stem end: A ripe honeydew smells sweetly of honey at the base. No smell = underripe.
- Slight give at ends: Both ends should give very slightly to firm pressure. Rock hard = underripe.
- Heavy for size: More weight = more juice content.
Honeydew vs Rockmelon
Honeydew has pale green flesh and a much milder, sweeter flavour than rockmelon. Rockmelon has orange flesh with a stronger musky flavour and higher vitamin A content. Honeydew has slightly more vitamin C. Both are in season at the same time — buy both and serve together for a stunning fruit platter.
