When Are Avocados in Season in your region?
Avocados are available at different times of year in your region, and supply varies through the year. Use the seasonal tool below for a month-by-month guide.
Hass vs Shepard Avocado
🥑 Hass Avocado
Dark, pebbly skin that turns black when ripe. Creamy, rich, nutty flavour. Higher fat content. Best for: Toast, guacamole, everything. Season: Apr–Jan.
🥑 Shepard Avocado
Stays green when ripe — cannot judge by colour. Slightly less creamy but does not brown after cutting. Best for: Salads, slicing. Season: Feb–May.
How to Tell if an Avocado is Ripe
- Hass: Skin should be dark purple-black. Gentle squeeze should give slightly all over — not just at one end.
- Shepard: Do NOT use colour — Shepard stays green. Use the squeeze test only.
- Stem test: Remove the small stem nub. Green underneath = perfectly ripe. Brown = overripe. Won't come off easily = underripe.
How to Ripen Avocados Quickly
- Paper bag + banana: Place hard avocado in a paper bag with a banana. Ripen in 1–2 days.
- Rice bowl: Bury the avocado in uncooked rice at room temperature — ripen in 1–3 days.
- Oven method: Wrap in foil, bake at 90°C for 10–15 minutes. Not as good as natural ripening but works in a pinch.
