Scale from the pack weight, then check the pack. Every Birds Eye and supermarket bag prints a time for 800W and 900W — this is the sanity check, not a replacement.

5 min 10 sec – 7 min 20 sec, stirring or shaking at halfway.

Yes, with care

Only if the bag is a purpose-made steam bag with vent holes — those are designed to go in whole. A plain freezer bag is not, and it will melt or burst.

  1. 1Lay the steam bag flat on the turntable, holes up, and pierce the film if the pack says to.
  2. 2Break up any frozen clumps so the pieces  cook at the same rate.

  3. 3Cook for 3 min 10 sec, then shake or stir so the pieces from the middle come to the top.
  4. 4Cook the remaining 3 min 10 sec.
  5. 5Stand for 1 minute. Frozen veg keeps cooking as it stands and goes from bright to olive-green fast past its point.

The pack time is written for a specific wattage and weight — the two numbers this tool asks for. If your result disagrees with the bag by more than about 30 seconds, follow the bag: the manufacturer tested that product, and I did not.

Every frozen vegetable pack prints a time, and it prints the wattage next to it for a reason: the two numbers that change the answer are the weight of the pack and the power of your oven, and neither is the same in any two kitchens.

This tool scales both, so you can check the bag against your own oven. If they disagree by more than about 30 seconds, follow the bag — the manufacturer tested that product and I did not.

Steam bags are a different method

A purpose-made steam bag is packaging designed to be cooked in: it vents through small holes, holds the steam and lets the vegetables cook in their own moisture. Those go in whole, laid flat, holes up.

A plain freezer bag is not the same thing. It has no vents, it is not heat-stabilised, and it will balloon and fail. Decant those into a bowl.

Why the stir matters more than the time

Frozen vegetables are a block of ice with air gaps, and microwaves heat the water at the edges first. Without a stir, the outside pieces are done while the middle of the block is still frozen — which is exactly what people mean when they say frozen veg goes mushy.

Break up the block before it goes in, then stir or shake at halfway. Two shorter bursts with a stir beat one long burst every time.

Where our own data comes in

We have scanned 336 pieces of  produce through this app, and the average freshness score came out at 82 out of 100 — with berries, bananas and watermelon the most scanned items by a wide margin. That tells you something about frozen veg: the people using this app are buying  fresh produce and then racing to use it.

Frozen is the other half of that habit. It is picked and frozen at peak, so a bag of peas in the freezer is often in better condition than a fresh punnet that has been in the fridge for a week. When you microwave it, the goal is to get it hot without pushing it past that peak — which is why the last minute matters more than the first.
