When Are Tomatoes in Season in Australia?

Tomatoes are a warm-weather crop. Peak season runs from November through March across most of Australia. Queensland grows tomatoes almost year-round due to its warm climate, while Victoria and NSW peak in summer. Winter tomatoes in southern states are typically greenhouse or hydroponic grown — technically fresh but lacking the flavour of sun-ripened outdoor fruit.

Never Refrigerate Tomatoes

This is the most important tomato rule. Cold temperatures (below 12°C) permanently destroy the volatile compounds that give tomatoes their flavour. Once refrigerated, a tomato cannot recover its flavour — even after returning to room temperature. Always store tomatoes at room temperature, stem-side down.

How to Pick a Flavourful Tomato

  • Smell: The most reliable test — a ripe tomato smells like a tomato. No fragrance means no flavour.
  • Weight: Heavy for its size means juicy. A light tomato is watery or mealy.
  • Colour: Deep, uniform red (or orange/yellow for those varieties). Avoid white-shouldered or green-tinged tomatoes.
  • Firmness: Should give slightly under gentle pressure — like a ripe peach. Rock hard = underripe.
  • Skin: Taut but not shiny. Wrinkling near the stem is fine and often means sweeter.

Varieties by Use

  • Roma/egg tomatoes: Low moisture, great for sauce and roasting.
  • Cherry/grape tomatoes: Sweeter, good raw in salads.
  • Beefsteak: Best for sandwiches and fresh slicing.
  • Heirloom: Peak flavour when in season — eat raw to appreciate them fully.

How to Ripen Tomatoes at Home

Place underripe tomatoes stem-side down on the bench away from direct sunlight. They will ripen in 2–5 days. Adding a banana nearby speeds up the process (ethylene gas). Never put them in a window — UV light breaks down lycopene and degrades flavour.
