Ruby Red vs Marsh Grapefruit

  • Ruby Red: Pink-red flesh, sweeter and less bitter than Marsh. Higher lycopene content from the red pigment. Excellent for fresh eating and juice. The most popular variety.
  • Marsh (White/Yellow): Classic sharp, tart grapefruit flavour. Higher in naringenin — a flavonoid with strong metabolic benefits. Used in cocktails and savoury dishes.

How to Pick a Juicy Grapefruit

  • Heavy for size: The most reliable indicator. A juicy grapefruit is notably heavier than a dry one of the same size.
  • Smooth, thin skin: Thin-skinned grapefruits have more flesh and juice. Thick, rough skin means more pith.
  • Slight spring: Gentle pressure should result in the slightest give — firm but not rock hard.

Important: Grapefruit and Medications

Grapefruit contains furanocoumarins that inhibit enzymes that break down certain medications, causing drug levels to rise dangerously. This applies to many statins, calcium channel blockers, immunosuppressants and some antibiotics. If you take regular medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist before eating grapefruit regularly.
